Kenna Modular Sofa

Start with a sofa seat height of 17–19 inches (43–48 cm) and a seat depth of 21–22 inches (53–56 cm) as shopping references. Measure height from the floor to the top of the seat cushion, and depth from the seat’s front edge to the front of the back cushion. Your sitting position, leg length, and cushion softness affect the fit. Check foot support, space behind your knees, and contact with the backrest.

Standard Sofa Seat Height and Depth

Use the table to identify the measurement you need. Seat dimensions describe the space you sit on. Overall dimensions describe the sofa’s outside size.

Measurement Shopping reference Where to measure What to check
Seat height 17–19 in43–48 cm Floor to the top of the seat cushion. Foot support and ease of sitting down and standing up.
Seat depth 21–22 in53–56 cm Front edge of the seat to the front of the back cushion. Back support, thigh support, and space behind the knees.
Overall height Check the selected model. Floor to the highest point of the sofa in the stated position. Window sills, visual height, and adjustable headrests.
Overall depth Check the selected model. Furthest front point to furthest back point. Room layout, walkways, and the space used when reclining.

These ranges are starting points for comparing seats. Deep-seat and reclining models can have different dimensions. See the CHITA model comparison below for specific product measurements. Centimeter values are rounded.

02 / TWO DIFFERENT HEIGHTS

Sofa Seat Height vs. Overall Sofa Height

When you search for the average couch height, check which part of the couch the number describes. A sofa listed as 36 inches high usually gives its overall height. Its seat cushion sits much closer to the floor.

Seat height tells you where your body sits. Overall height tells you how high the sofa reaches. A low back and a high seat can appear together on the same model. For a reclining sofa, check the overall height with the headrest lowered and raised.

The same distinction applies to depth. Overall depth includes the back structure and cushions. Effective seat depth is the usable distance in front of the back cushion. A loose pillow behind you shortens that space.

Read the labels before comparing numbers. A 40-inch overall depth describes the sofa’s footprint. To compare sitting space, look for the separately labeled seat depth.

03 / A TAPE-MEASURE CHECK

How to Measure Sofa Seat Height and Depth

Measure a sofa you already own

  1. Set it up for normal use. Put the back cushions in place and close the footrest. Remove loose throws that cover the measurement points.
  2. Measure seat height. Hold the tape vertically from the floor to the top of the seat cushion near the front edge. Record this unloaded height.
  3. Measure seat depth. Hold the tape horizontally from the front edge to the front of the back cushion at seat level. Measure chaise and corner seats separately.
  4. Record the outside dimensions. Measure the widest, deepest, and highest points. For a recliner, record the space it uses when fully open.

Check how those measurements fit you

  1. Sit as you normally would. Try your usual reading, conversation, or lounging position with the back cushion in place.
  2. Check your feet and knees. For upright sitting, rest your feet on the floor or a stable foot support. Leave a small gap between the seat edge and the backs of your knees.
  3. Check the cushion under your weight. Ask someone to measure the cushion’s height beside you while seated. Compare the feel with the unloaded measurement.
  4. Stand up and sit down a few times. Note whether the cushion, depth, and armrests let you do this comfortably. Write down what you would change.

For an online purchase, use a seat you find comfortable as your reference. Compare its measurements with the selected sofa’s dimension drawing. Review the current return policy and check the delivery route before ordering.

04 / FEET, CUSHIONS & ARMRESTS

Choosing Seat Height for Sitting and Standing

A standard couch seat height around 17–19 inches is a useful place to start. Test the combination of height, cushion firmness, and seat depth. A soft cushion may sit lower under your weight than its listed height suggests.

For upright sitting

Look for a position where your feet feel supported and your thighs rest comfortably on the cushion. If your feet hang freely, try a stable footstool or compare a lower seat. If your knees sit well above your hips, try a firmer or higher seat and check whether the position feels easier.

For easier standing

Test a slightly higher, firmer seat alongside supportive armrests. Pay attention to whether you can move toward the front edge and place your feet for standing. For older adults or anyone who finds rising difficult, the person who will use the sofa should try the full sit-to-stand movement.

A low-profile sofa suits people who enjoy sitting closer to the floor. Check the effort needed to get up, particularly after the cushion has compressed. Your everyday movement is the useful test.

05 / HOW YOU LIKE TO SIT

Choosing Seat Depth for Upright Sitting and Lounging

Your height can narrow the options. Leg length, back-cushion thickness, and your preferred sitting position refine the choice. Measure a seat you already find comfortable, then compare the depth and cushion feel of the sofas you are considering.

Upright sitting and shorter legs

Use 21–22 inches as a starting reference and try a shallower seat if you need less depth. Sit all the way back and check whether your feet are supported while the cushion edge stays clear of the backs of your knees. A firm back pillow can shorten a seat you already own.

Taller users and longer legs

Try additional depth when a shorter cushion leaves you feeling perched near the edge. Check thigh support and backrest contact together. A deeper seat should still allow your usual upright position.

Cross-legged sitting and lounging

Seats around 25 inches or deeper give you more room to bring your legs onto the cushion. A chaise or ottoman creates another place to stretch out. Check both the lounging position and the upright position you use for conversation or reading.

For a household with different preferences, compare modular sofas with separate upright and chaise seats. Agree on the main sitting position for each seat before choosing a layout.

06 / CHECK ONE THING AT A TIME

Fixing Common Sofa Fit Problems

What you notice What to check What to try
Your feet do not reach the floor Seat height and whether reaching the back cushion pulls your legs forward. Use a stable foot support. Add a firm back pillow if the seat is too deep. Compare a lower or shallower seat for your next purchase.
The seat feels too deep The gap behind your back when you sit with your feet supported. Place a firm pillow behind your back. Keep the knee area clear and retest your sitting position.
Standing up takes effort Cushion compression, distance to the front edge, and armrest support. Compare a firmer, slightly higher seat and practice sitting down and standing up before buying.
The front edge presses into your legs Foot support and contact between the cushion edge and the backs of your knees. Adjust your position, shorten the sitting depth with a back pillow, or support your feet. Notice whether pressure changes.

For a reclining model, test it with the footrest closed as well as open. Footrest and headrest adjustments change your position; the closed seat’s dimensions still matter for everyday upright use.

Sofa Measurement FAQs

Is sofa height the same as seat height?

Overall sofa height runs from the floor to the highest point of the sofa. Seat height ends at the top of the seat cushion. Check the dimension label to see which height a product listing gives.

Does seat depth include the back cushion?

Effective seat depth is measured in front of the back cushion when it is in its usual position. Removing that cushion exposes a larger area. Use the manufacturer’s diagram to confirm the measurement points and cushion position.

How can I tell if a 24-inch seat depth suits me?

Try a seat with a similar depth. Sit back, support your feet, and check the space behind your knees. Then try your usual lounging position. Record the depth of a seat that feels comfortable and use it to compare sofas.

Should I measure seat height while someone is sitting?

Record both the unloaded height and the height beside the person when seated. Ask the retailer which condition its listed measurement describes. This is especially useful when comparing a soft, loose cushion with a firmer seat.

Which other sofa dimensions should I check online?

Check overall width, depth, and height; chaise length; fully reclined depth; and delivery-package dimensions. Measure doorways, stairs, elevators, and the route into the room. Mark the sofa’s footprint with tape to check walking space.

Keep a short measurement list: your preferred seat height, usable seat depth, cushion feel, and room footprint. Use it alongside the selected sofa’s dimension drawing.
