How to Arrange a TV Stand, Sofa and Recliner

Quick answer: Place the TV where the main seats have a clear view, center the most-used sofa seats on it, and angle the recliner beside the sofa. Test the screen height from both seated and reclined positions. Measure the recliner fully open, keep its footrest clear of the main walkway, and match the TV stand to the television’s support footprint and weight.

Walk from the room entrance to your usual seat, then open the recliner fully. That simple rehearsal often reveals the layout problem: a footrest across the route, a sofa arm cutting into the view, or a screen that sits too high for the position you actually use.

Plan the screen, main sofa and recliner together. Mark their positions with removable tape before moving heavy furniture.

Place the screen and cabinet

Choose a wall where the screen is visible from the main seating and where doors can open freely. Look for reflections on the screen during the hours you usually watch. A window beside the television may be easier to manage with curtains than a bright window reflected directly in it.

Set height from your seated position

Sit on the sofa with your usual cushions and look straight ahead. Mark that eye line on the wall, then test the proposed screen position from the recliner in its viewing position. Keep the picture within an easy line of sight without continually lifting your chin. Use the actual seats to choose the height; a fixed floor measurement misses differences in seat height and reclining angle. Sony's BRAVIA 6 screen-position guidance also uses seated eye level as the reference for the center of the screen.

Check what supports the television

For a television standing on a cabinet, both feet or the entire pedestal must fit on the usable top. Match the TV's weight and footprint to the stand's stated capacity and dimensions. Allow the ventilation and cable space specified for the TV, console and other equipment. Our TV stand width, height and depth guide includes checks for the TV feet and pedestal as well as the cabinet dimensions.

Secure the television and its supporting furniture according to their instructions, as covered in the CPSC's TV and furniture anchoring guidance.

Our Chad TV stand combines storage with cable cutouts. Use the measurements of your television and devices to choose their positions on and inside the cabinet.

Set the sofa by the view from the seat

Center the most-used part of the sofa on the screen. Measure from your eyes in the seated position to the screen, then try the distance with the content you watch: subtitles, sports scores and games can expose details that a room photo misses. Use Sony's viewing-distance guidance by TV resolution as a starting point and adjust the seating to suit your room and preference.

Check each end seat as well as the middle. On a curved sofa, people at opposite ends may face different directions. Our Teleri modular curved sofa gives you several seating positions to consider; test the screen view from each planned module before settling on the arrangement.

Give the recliner room to move

Place the recliner beside the sofa and turn it toward the screen. Open the footrest and backrest through their full travel. For a swivel or glider, also test the motion allowed by its instructions. Keep the moving chair clear of tables, curtains and cables.

A wall-hugger recliner can reduce the space needed behind the chair by moving forward as it reclines. Measure the occupied floor area with the footrest open as well. The rear clearance and total reclined depth answer different questions. Our wall-hugger recliner measurement guide shows how rear clearance and the open footprint fit into the room plan.

Route the main walkway behind the sofa or around the seating group where possible. Measure its narrowest point with the recliner open, then walk the route while someone is seated. Keep room for the people and mobility aids that use the space. Plug a power recliner into a suitable nearby outlet with its cable clear of the mechanism and walking route.

Our Sonia recliner includes Bluetooth speakers and adjustable power lumbar support. Position it for its occupant's view first; check your TV's Bluetooth audio compatibility separately if that is how you plan to connect it.

Three layouts to try

A rectangular room with one main screen

Put the television on a usable short wall, the sofa opposite it and the recliner beside one end of the sofa. Angle the recliner toward the screen. Leave the main route along the other side or behind the sofa. Move the coffee table outside the footrest's path.

A small room with a corner available

Place the sofa on the wall that leaves the clearest entrance route, then try the recliner in the adjacent corner. Test its open footprint at that angle: turning a chair diagonally can increase the width of floor it occupies. A small side table beside the chair may work better than a central coffee table in the opening path.

An open room with two uses

Use the back of the sofa to define the TV area and keep the route to the dining area behind it. Place the recliner inside the seating area, clear of that route. With our Ivy modular sectional, choose a configuration that gives the outer seats a useful view and leaves access around the group.

Test the room before moving day

  1. Mark the sofa, TV stand and fully open recliner footprints.
  2. Sit at every viewing position and check the whole picture.
  3. Open cabinet drawers, room doors and the recliner.
  4. Walk to the entrance and adjacent rooms with the chair open.
  5. Check screen reflections in daylight and with evening lamps on.
  6. Confirm cords and equipment ventilation follow their instructions.

FAQ

Where should a recliner go next to a sofa?

Start beside one end of the sofa, angled toward the screen. Keep its open footrest and moving back inside the seating area, clear of the main walkway. Adjust the angle until the viewer can face the picture naturally.

What if the room has both a fireplace and a TV?

Try the TV on a wall beside the fireplace so you can set its height independently. A sofa facing the TV with an angled recliner can keep both features in view. For a TV above a fireplace, follow the fireplace and TV installation requirements for heat and clearance, then test the viewing height from the seats.

How far should the coffee table sit from a recliner?

Place it beyond the chair's fully extended footrest and leave room to stand up and move past it. Measure your chair while open. A side table is often easier to reach without putting a table in the moving footrest's path.

Does the recliner need to match the sofa?

No. Repeat one visible element, such as a color, wood tone or curved shape, to connect the pieces. A rug or cushion can carry that shared color while the sofa and recliner keep different upholstery.

How can I reduce glare on the TV?

Move or dim the light reflected in the screen, or use curtains to control the window causing it. Check the reflection from the actual seats before changing the television's position.
