How to Choose a Statement Coffee Table for Your Living Room

Mark the table's footprint with painter's tape. Try approximately 18 inches between the table and sofa as a first arrangement, then sit down, reach forward and walk around it. Adjust the gap for your legroom and reach. Keep the main passage through the room wide enough for the people and mobility equipment that use it. Measure your sofa seat height as well. A top near seat height or slightly lower is a useful starting point for drinks and books. Use a stable box at the proposed height to test the reach before ordering.

Choose a shape for the route through the room

• Round: useful when people pass around several sides. Mark its full diameter; a broad circular top can take up substantial floor space.
• Oval: offers a longer surface along a sofa with curved ends beside the approach to the seats.
• Rectangular: can suit a narrow seating gap and provide a surface within reach of multiple sofa seats. Place the corners outside the main walking route.
• Paired or nesting pieces: let you separate surfaces for different seats. Test the arrangement in both its stored and spread-out positions.

In a small room, compare the actual footprints of your options. A slim rectangular table may fit a long gap better than a round table with a large diameter.
