Best Outdoor Cushion Fabrics for Sun and Rain

For cushions on a sunny patio, outdoor-rated solution-dyed acrylic and olefin are useful starting points. In a rainy spot, the cover needs to shed water while the cushion underneath can drain and dry. Choose the fabric for the exposure your seating actually gets, then match its cleaning method to the way you use the space.

What fabric works best for outdoor cushions?

Start with the job the fabric has to do. Cushions need upholstery that feels suitable against the skin and works with the filling inside. A sling chair needs fabric strong enough to support a person while stretched across its frame. A furniture cover needs the right fit, water-shedding construction, and ventilation.

Solution dyeing is a coloring process; acrylic and olefin are fibers. Both the fiber and the way a particular fabric is made belong in the comparison. Choose for full sun or frequent rain

Begin with an outdoor-rated solution-dyed acrylic or olefin cushion fabric with documented colorfastness. Compare the actual fabric and color, including the exposure covered by any fade warranty. A swatch lets you judge texture and color beside the furniture; the published specification supplies the weather information.

Shade can also reduce direct exposure. Include an umbrella or covered seating position in your patio seating plan if you want to use the space during the brightest part of the day.

A patio with frequent showers or damp weather

Choose a cushion assembly with a clear way to drain and dry. Olefin is a useful fabric to compare because its fiber resists moisture absorption. Water can still remain between yarns or inside the cushion. Look for the filling description, the underside construction, and instructions for drying the complete cushion.

Water-resistant fabric and wet cushion filling

Water-repellent fabric encourages drops to bead or shed from its surface. A waterproof barrier is intended to stop water passing through under its stated conditions. A finished cushion also has seams, a zipper, backing, and an underside; these can let water reach the filling.

A cushion can feel dry on top while its insert is damp. After rain, separate removable cushions and follow their drying instructions so air reaches the damp areas. For a cushion approved for upright drying, stand it on its edge in a sheltered, ventilated place. Put it into storage only when the cover, underside, and filling have dried.

A washable-cover example

Rain, cleaning, and winter storage

Brush off loose leaves, pollen, and dry debris with a tool suitable for the upholstery. This keeps dirt from accumulating around seams.
Blot spills promptly with a clean absorbent cloth. Use the cleaning solution and rinsing method specified for the cover.
Before prolonged rain or seasonal storage, move removable cushions to the dry storage space provided for them. Let any damp components dry fully first.
Keep dry furniture protected as its instructions require. Leave the ventilation openings of a fitted cover clear.
Use machine washing, bleach, or pressure washing only where the particular care instructions provide that method. A zipper can serve assembly or maintenance purposes.

Is acrylic or olefin better for a sunny patio?

Solution-dyed acrylic is a good choice for a sunny patio because its color runs through the fiber, helping it resist fading. Olefin is useful when the same patio also gets frequent showers because it absorbs little moisture.

Can outdoor cushions stay outside in the rain?

Removable cushions are best brought under cover during prolonged rain. Water-resistant fabric can shed rain at the surface while moisture enters through seams and openings. After a shower, let the filling and underside dry before storage.

Can I machine-wash outdoor cushion covers?

Only if the covers are labeled for machine washing. Our Clover 100% olefin covers can be removed from their inserts, machine-washed in cold water, and air-dried.

Can waterproof fabric turn an indoor sofa into patio furniture?

No. Waterproof upholstery covers only the surface. An indoor sofa’s frame and filling can still be exposed to outdoor moisture through seams, openings, and the underside.

Can I use cushion fabric to repair a sling chair?

A sling chair needs load-bearing sling fabric. Its fabric carries the sitter’s weight under tension; cushion upholstery relies on a separate seat and filling for support.
