What changed in April 2026?

Intertek's UL 962 update notice identifies April 18, 2026 as the effective date for reviewing its affected listing reports against the specified revisions. The changes include evaluation of controls used for safety functions and requirements for particular furniture types and usage areas. The required protections are assessed within the applicable product classification.

For a recliner, identify the exact model's documented controls, warnings, and certification scope. A purchase date alone leaves those details unanswered. If automatic stopping, reversing, or a child lock matters to your household, ask how that feature operates on the selected chair.

Charge and position the pack as instructed

Use the approved charger. Match it to the exact battery pack. Obtain a specified replacement when the original is damaged or missing.
Choose the instructed charging location. Keep the pack and charger uncovered, away from combustible materials and exits, and within the listed temperature range.
Protect the cables. Follow the installation route, keeping wires clear of pinch points, the footrest mechanism, and places pets can chew them.
Follow the charge indication. Use the stated charging time and completion procedure. Confirm whether operation while charging is permitted for that system.
Record the model and dates. Keep the pack and charger details with the chair information so replacement and recall checks are straightforward.

A battery management system monitors and controls functions within its design. Continue following the pack's charging, storage, and replacement instructions. Those instructions also establish the appropriate storage charge and temperature for periods when the chair is unused.

Stop using a pack that changes shape, smells, or overheats

NFPA's lithium-ion battery safety guidance lists unusual odor, excessive heat, a change in shape or color, leaking, and odd noises as reasons to stop using a lithium-ion battery. Stop charging and using the equipment. If it is safe to do so, disconnect power at the outlet. Keep people and pets away and obtain replacement or disposal guidance for that exact pack.

If the battery is smoking, hissing, or burning, leave the area and call 911 from a safe location. Avoid handling or carrying the battery. For a retired or damaged pack, use the designated battery collection or hazardous-waste process; keep it out of household trash and ordinary recycling.

Keep the moving area clear during every adjustment

Look under the footrest, behind the chair, and around the base before operating it. Move children, pets, toys, and blankets away from the mechanism. Store the controller away from children when the chair is idle. Follow the model's instructions for disabling controls or disconnecting power.

Use the motor operating limit printed in the chair or actuator instructions. Different systems have different permitted run and rest periods.
